How to get to the Sale

Our "End of an Era" Sale will be held on the property at
Marena Stud, RMB 1116 Yarramalong Rd, Wyong NSW 2259
on Saturday 28th January, 2006 at 2:00 pm.
Inspection from 11:00 am on the day.

The End of an Era

Over the last few years we have been reducing our numbers as planned towards a “retirement” for Bruce and myself.Maureen, Bruce & Lindy in NZ to judge

Well that day has come.  After a lifetime of riding (I commenced at 4 years) and loving horses it is very hard to let go especially as I keep getting lots of ideas to breed better horses but as the saying goes, “The mind is strong but the body is weak”.  Both Bruce and I are now 72 years young, it is time to slow down - in the work department at least!

So our beloved horses go under the hammer in our “End of an Era” Sale to find new homes and new futures.

Only a few breeding mares and some show horses will be retained for the future.  Just the number that Lindy can handle until her children are older.  The stallions will still stand at stud, agistment, riding lessons and clinics will continue as usual.  Marena Stud will no longer have 40 broodmares.

Satisfied owners of successful horses in all states testify to the consistent excellence of Marena horses.

The Marena horse is well known throughout Australia as a consistently successful performer with good temperament and outstanding movement.  Now circumstances have changed and all must go.

The horses listed in the Sale represent the bloodlines of our great stallions Kalimah, Alcimaster, Sky Chief, Jedda Park Little Sunray, Weston Sun, Karioca, Sun Puff, Konrad and Shifting.  The great female Families – Dance, Star, Amber, Flower, Cameo and True Love are also represented.

In the females we have the very best left to sell; those that we intended to keep as broodmares.  If buyers show them and in the future want to sell them, Lindy would be interested in having them back as broodmares.

We are in our fifth decade of horse breeding.  We aim at winning in the show ring and our horses have certainly made their mark there but have had success in all fields – showing, dressage, jumping, eventing, endurance, sporting, harness and Pony Club.  Many have stayed competitive into their late teens because of their soundness and have been especially suitable for children.  Marena horses are very versatile,

Aiming for consistent quality over a period of 46 years of horse breeding, we are gladdened by the testimonials we have received over the years about the success and reliability of our horses.  Many say their horses are treasured family members, performing at a competitive level into their late teens.

Thanks to all the people over the past 40 years that have supported us and bought our horses - we wish you continued success.

These last of our accumulated stock will be sold mostly at an unreserved price.  It is our hope that you will get a bargain and our beloved horses will get a good home and bring you success and happiness.

We wish you the very best of luck as you “Reach for the Stars”   Maureen Walker

About Marena Stud

Maureen, Bruce and Lindy Walker have had a lifetime involvement with all kinds of horses.Walker Family at Wyong Show 1968

The Walkers began breeding horses in the 1950’s to work their rugged mountain property Mt. Yango south west of Wollombi NSW.

Marena Stud breed, break in, train and show their own horses.  The time and thought and tradition that has gone into the breeding of the Marena horses has indeed made them unique.

An open mind looking for better ways and more knowledge enabled the Walkers to move with the times and keep an approach as new as tomorrow – however, the Walkers have never followed fashion slavishly and have kept a clear conception of the ideals of conformation and the attributes that make a first class riding horse.  In doing so they have been able to produce champions for decades as fashions come and go.

Your Marena choice will take you to the show today and will be equally fashionable in 10 years time.

It is the Stud’s aim to stay as close to nature as possible, hence all our horses are paddock reared.  Constitution being a very important component in our particular jigsaw of breeding.

If the mare cannot stay in good condition and rear a good foal, we do not want to breed from her because we feel that constitution and temperament and useability are intrinsically linked.

A few people enjoy showing their horses in hand but the bulk of purchasers of horses wish to ride their horses.  We keep that firmly in mind at Marena Stud – all broodmares must have proved their ability either in the show ring, working or as a producer of quality saddle animals.  We have used only daughters from these mares to continue our breeding.  All our stallions also have had to prove their ability under saddle before we use them.

We believe this explains the consistent excellence of the Marena horses’ performance over four decades of breeding.

We rear the youngsters in a natural paddock environment to allow them time to grow and develop, physically and mentally, galloping to improve wind and muscle, and free as the breeze to develop an unhindered sense of freedom and character in an atmosphere of liberty just as nature intended.

All the horses, when they are broken in, undergo a comprehensive programme which includes dressage, hacking, fast work, jumping, cross country and road work.

The young horses are well handled to lead, pick up legs, and have been mouthed ready to ride

Your purchase will be the result of 40 years of breeding by performance selection.

The purchase of young stock provides the opportunity to buy a future Champion very reasonably.

All you need to invest is a little time.  Marena horses train very quickly and have an inherent good temperament.

We have chosen representatives wherever possible from all our breeding lines and hope that your purchases will give you pleasure, success and happiness the Marena horses have given us.

We are happy to help with your selection and wish you the best of luck as you “Reach for the Stars.”

The Female Families - Breeding Champions from Champions

The horses at Marena Stud are grouped into families tracing from mother to daughter to continue the tradition of producing versatile quality riding horses.  The success of the Stud can be attributed largely to the strength of the female lines due to the Stud’s policy of only breeding from the best females.

Over the years certain Families have proved their supremacy and handed down their “winning ways” and strong, sound physique unfailingly on to their progeny.

Representatives of these powerful female lines are in the Catalogue.

Marena CapriceThe Dance Family – Marena Cha Cha, the great matriarch was the beginning of this most successful family.  She had everything – good looks, hard clear bone and a placid nature.  These attributes she passed on to her progeny down the generations.  Her progeny have won 37 Royal Show Championships.  Marena Caprice pictured at right.

The Star Family – Originating from Marena Valetta (Cha Cha’s smallest daughter) also was always mated to Jedda Park Little Sunray and produced a dynasty of Royal Champions of their own.  Royal Show Champions Marena Stardust, Marena Gold Dust come from this family.

Marena MayflowerThe Flower Family – This family started with a mare bred by the late Mary Willsallen, Lowlynn Bluebell.  Her daughters, bred to Marena stallions, produced a bouquet of champions including Australia’s first National Champion, Marena Mayflower (by Kalimah) who in turn produced Marena Windflower (by Sun Puff (Imp)), five times Supreme Champion at Sydney Royal.  Marena Mayflower picture at left.

Marena Amber FollyThe True Love Family – From the exquisite 11.2 hds mare, Marena True Love who was by Australia’s leading pony stallion, Lowlynn Silver Chief.  She won Sir Clive Uhr trophy at the Australian Horse of the Year 1976.  This family has produced children’s ponies and wonderful champions like Marena Maxina and Marena Sweet Kiss.

The Cameo Family – Originated from the pony mare, Cassette (by Lowlynn Silver Chief) mated to Kalimah.  This mare produced Marena Cameo who had five lovely daughters.  They all proved to be show winners, including Marena Captivate – Champion at Brisbane and Sydney, Marena Accent – Supreme at Sydney Royal and Supreme ASH National Championships.

The Amber Family – The newest of the super Families commenced when we bought Merrima Topaz, an Australian Pony Stud Book mare.  She produced Marena Amber Folly (pictured at right), an amazing pony who won three Grand National titles in a row, who is proving a prolific brood mare.
