About The Stud
Many people breed horses to sell them for others to ride. Many people ride horses that they have bought.
Marena Stud must be unique in the fact that they breed, break in, train and show their own horses!
The time and thought and tradition that has gone into the breeding of the Marena horses has indeed made them unique.
Maureen, Bruce and Lindy Walker have had a lifetime involvement with all kinds of horses.
An open mind looking for better ways and more knowledge enabled Maureen Walker to move with the times and keep an approach as new as tomorrow.
However, over forty-five years of breeding horses, she has kept a clear concept of the ideals of conformation and the attributes that make a first class riding horse. In doing so she has been able to produce champions for decades as fashions come and go.
Your Marena choice will take you to the show today and will be equally fashionable in 10 years time.
Maureen has ridden all her life and showed extensively from her home town of Wyong, competing at Sydney Royal from when she was 5 years old until the Show was discontinued during the Second World War. She rode again at the first Sydney Royal Show after the war.
The Walkers began breeding horses in the 1950’s to work their rugged mountain property Mt. Yango situated south west of Wollombi, NSW. Lindy grew up on this property and rode for hours in the hills chasing cattle, beginning on a cushion in front of her dad, Bruce, when she was 22 months old.
This property made Lindy an active, experienced rider and the Marena horses versatile, working on the property all week and showing at weekends. The Stud moved to its present site in Wyong in 1972. Selling their stud cattle at that time the Walkers concentrated on their horse breeding and showing programme.
Breeding Champions from Champions
The horses at Marena Stud are grouped into families tracing from mother to daughter to continue the tradition of producing versatile quality riding horses. The success of the Stud can be attributed largely to the strength of the female lines due to the Stud’s policy of only breeding from the best females.
Maureen and Lindy are well known for their teaching ability and always have a swag of children riders with them at shows competing. Over the years Maureen has taught a number of very successful riders in several disciplines as well as Showing.
Since moving to Wyong the Walkers have an enviable record in the period from 1974 to 2003 of 207 Royal Show Champions with their horses and riders and have taught a number of riders who in turn teach and have their own show teams now.
Marena Trained Riders Have Won Seventy-six Royal Show Riding Championships.
